Life outside the box

Dusita Chumsri (Fah)Dusita Chumsri (Fah), Chic Joking (CJ) of Chic Channel (True Vision 68), grew up in Sydney after her family moved there when she was three years old. Fah has many great experiences to share, living and studying in the dynamic city of Australia.

Decide to Design life

Fah said she spent time discovering her real interest. “I undertook study and work experiences in various fields including public relations, event management, and the fashion business to find out what I really liked. I then realised that Advertising is the field I truly wanted to work in.” Fah was successfully accepted into an Advertising program at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), which was very competitive. She undertook an internship at an advertising agency during the course and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Public Communication and Advertising.

Creativity builds identity

Fah said “the program trained students to come up with their own ideas, to debate the ideas with others, and to think outside the box.”
As a result, students build their identities, contrary to learning by memorisation that often hinders creativity. Moreover, students are engaged in practical learning so they are not afraid when facing real world problems.

Nowadays, Fah employs her communication skills in her work and her life. She still maintains contacts with classmates and interns, many of whom are now working for advertising agencies such as Saatchi and Saatchi, and JWT.  Fah’s ‘food for thought’ for Thai students wishing to study overseas: “It is not what you learn but the experience you gain”.

Variation in Communication

There are a range of prominent communication programs offered in Australia. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) stands out because of its established academic reputation and practical teaching. Based in Brisbane, QUT is renowned for courses such as the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Creative and Professional Writing) where students work intensively on writing in a number of forms and genres including novels and short stories, creative non-fiction and youth writing. It also builds specialist professional writing skills in corporate and persuasive writing, editing and scriptwriting. The Bachelor of Journalism builds practical skills across print, broadcast and online media. QUT’s Bachelor of Mass Communication has various study areas including advertising, international journalism, media and communication, public relations and television. QUT also offers a comprehensive range of postgraduate programs by coursework or research.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth offers communications programs including a Bachelor of Communication with majors in advertising, broadcasting, creative services, journalism, mass communication, media and cultural studies, public relations, and scriptwriting. Students usually take two majors from another degree such as film and video, graphic design, interactive media development, marketing, and photomedia. Other degrees offered include Bachelor of Writing, and Master of Professional Communication.
